Rodman's Hollow | Murray Brandon Art | Watercolor Art

Rodman’s Hollow is a 230-acre glacial outwash basin on the southwest part of Block Island. It consists of wooded areas and small hills filled with bushy rockrose, bayberry, shadbush, arrowwood, and more. There is a bevy of trails crisscrossing through the Hollow, and its southern-most part consists of towering bluffs, panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean, and access to the breathtaking Black Rock Beach. Rodman’s Hollow is considered the birthplace of ecological conservation on Block Island. The Block Island Conservancy was created in 1972 by Island residents dismayed by a developer’s plan to build houses in and around the Hollow. The mission was successful, and the Hollow remains protected.  This painting is of a trail in Rodman’s Hollow lined with shadbushes showing their white view on a Sunny May morning. Mid-May is the time of year to see spectacular shadbushes bloom.
